Terms of use

Scope

These terms cover the Cognithamus website and the XI operator console. By using either, you agree to them. If you do not, please do not use them.

The public site

The public pages are provided for information. You may read, link to and quote them with attribution. You may not present them as your own work, or use automated means to place an unreasonable load on the service.

Your account

Anyone may create a XI account. It costs nothing, requires no email address and no password, and grants an identity and a private workspace of your own.Connecting a repository is open on this deployment. An account that connects one authorises Cognithamus to read that repository.

You are responsible for the device holding your passkey. Because there is no password and no reset flow, losing every registered passkey means losing the account — there is no way for us to restore it, and asking will not produce one.

You may delete your account at any time from your workspace. Deletion is immediate and permanent: it removes your passkeys, your workspace and its name, and the account itself, and we keep no copy.

Who may hold an account

You must be at least 13 years old. If you are under 18, you may use XI only with a parent or guardian’s permission, and they accept these terms with you. Cognithamus is not directed at children, and an account found to belong to someone under 13 is deleted.

You also confirm that you are allowed to connect what you connect. Only connect a repository you own, or one you are permitted to have measured — connecting someone else’s code because it happens to be public is not something these terms permit.

What you may not do with it

Do not use XI to attack, overload or interfere with it or with anything it reads. Specifically: no attempting to reach another workspace’s data, no automated account creation, no probing the authentication mechanism, and no using the acquisition system to place load on a third party’s repository host.

If you believe you have found a security flaw, report it to Cognithamus@proton.me rather than testing it. Reports made in good faith are welcome and will not be treated as a breach of these terms.

The operator console

The operator console is separate from an account and is restricted to operators holding a registered passkey for a given instance. Creating an account does not grant it. Do not attempt to access an instance you have not been granted a credential for, and do not attempt to circumvent, probe or disrupt the authentication mechanism.

Documentation and content

The documentation published on this site consists of internal working notes. It is made available as a record of how the system was reasoned about, not as instructions to rely on. Documents may contradict one another, and some are explicitly superseded by later ones. Treat them accordingly.

Intellectual property

The Cognithamus name, the mark, the site and the software are owned by their author. Nothing on this site transfers any licence to the software. Quoting the documentation with attribution is welcome; republishing it wholesale is not.

No warranty

Cognithamus is early software provided “as is”, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose. Its output is derived from whatever sources happen to be connected, and where a source is missing it reports that rather than guessing — but no representation is made that the output is complete or correct for your purposes. Do not use it as the sole basis for a decision that matters.

No service commitment

There is no uptime commitment, no support commitment and no guarantee of continuity. The site and the console may change or be withdrawn at any time without notice.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental or consequential loss, or for loss of profit, revenue or data, arising from use of the site or the console. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law.

Ending it

You may stop at any time by deleting your account, which takes effect immediately and needs no notice to us. We may suspend or end an account that breaches these terms, or withdraw the service entirely — see the previous section, which is why you should not depend on it for anything that matters.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Illinois, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Any dispute arising from them or from use of Cognithamus will be brought in the state or federal courts located in Illinois, and you and we each consent to the jurisdiction of those courts.

If you are a consumer resident somewhere whose law gives you the right to bring proceedings locally, or protections that cannot be waived by agreement, nothing here takes those away.

Using it from outside the United States

Cognithamus is operated from Illinois and runs on United States infrastructure. It is offered from there rather than to any particular country, and there is no regional instance and no data-residency option. If you use it from elsewhere, you do so on your own initiative and are responsible for complying with your local law — including any rule about where your employer’s code may be sent.

What that means for your data is set out in the privacy notice, including what has deliberately not been put in place.

If part of this does not hold

If any provision here is found unenforceable, the rest stays in force and that provision is narrowed only as far as it must be. These terms, with the privacy notice, are the whole agreement between us about Cognithamus, and replace anything said elsewhere.

Changes

These terms may change; the date at the top of this page changes with them. Continuing to use the site after a change means accepting the revised terms.
